Magic The Gather: What happens if two cards abilities cancel each other?
The title might be a little bit to vague so let me elaborate. My friend and I were play MTG yesterday. He had “Near Death Experiance” and exactly 1 life so his card says he wins the game. On my side of the field though I have “Platinum Angel”. So what happens?
Why is it that “Platinum Angel”‘s effect seems to take priority?
As long as you control Platinum Angel, you can’t lose and your opponent can’t win.
Referring to your additional question:
Rule 101.2 in the Comprehensive Rules state:
When a rule or effect allows or directs something to happen, and other effect stats that it can’t happen, the “can’t” effect takes precedence.
That’s also explain why Wrath of God can destroy creatures with regeneration.
Addition detail about Near-Death Experience. Experience’s ability triggers only when your opponent has exactly 1 life AND during your opponent’s upkeep. However, the ability does nothing if your opponent’s life is not 1 when it resolves.
Case 1: No one responds to Experience ability and you don’t control a Platinum Angel. Experience resolves, your opponent wins.
Case 2: You respond to Experience’s ability by casting Rest of the Weary (Target player gains 4 life.) targeting your opponent. Rest of the Weary is put on the stack and becomes the topmost item on the stack. Assuming no other things happen. Rest of the Weary resolves first, your opponent gains 4 life. So now he/she has 5 life. Then Experience’s ability resolves. At this point, since your opponent does not have exactly 1 life, the ability does nothing. Game goes on and your opponent doesn’t win the game … yet.
