In warhammer 40K is it realistic to have a pure catachan jungle fighters army that you use for all your battle?
Everyone seems to think they are only good in the jungle and worthless otherwise. I mean if you mix them with a few ogryns and heavy weapons squad, would that make the battle more even.
It is realistic both in the sense of being true to the background (battle groups made exclusively from a single world are quite normal), and in the sense of it being possible to run such an army and win with it regularly.
Catachan infantry platoons should, of course, have the appropriate doctrines (although look for these rules to change radically in the new Codex, due out later this year), but that’s pretty much the extent to which you’re restricted.
Catachans can still take Chimeras, Leman Russes, Sentinels and Hellhounds – all powerful and imposing units on the battlefield – as well as Ogryns. You should probably steer away from Basilisks, but a well-rounded battle group is still perfectly feasible without breaking with the background.
Moreover, the new rules for going to ground, cover and TLOS favour numerous, light-armoured infantry units. But take care of over-exposing your infantry when you need to seize objectives!
