What is the best way to assemble pewter warhammer 40k figures?
I just recently got into warhammer 40k and have not worked with any pewter figures yet. Are there any suggestions on methods or glues to use? I have thought of possibly trying an epoxy but because these are so small and with so many parts it would be more trouble than its worth. Me and a friend have been trying crazy glue, lock tite, and pinning with a drill and paper clips. I would like to avoid the pinning as much as possible especially after I learned pewter is 27% lead and my friend got his fingers poked several times attempting to pin his nobs together. So yea I just want to avoid lead poisoning. THANKS!
The type of pewter used for Games Workshop miniatures contains 0% lead, if it contained any lead at all the packs would have to carry a warning. Lead isn’t all that dangerous anyway, so long as you are sensible and don’t put lead-alloy miniatures in your mouth and remember to wash your hands.
Assembling multi-part metal miniatures is always a pain, all you can do is practice, practice, practice until the technique becomes familiar; some people can put together metal miniatures faster than I can assemble plastic ones but assembling metal miniatures is a very particular skill that demands time and patience to learn. It’s no wonder plastics have become so popular.
I really hate pinning, especially with modern pewter miniatures being so much harder than old-fashioned soft lead-alloy ones but it’s essential for creating strong joints. btw, when using a normal hobby drill (pin vice) make sure you only turn the drill one way or you’ll chew-up the drill-bit.
The trick with epoxy resin is to use it sparingly (I apply it with a cocktail stick or needle) and don’t attempt to glue a model together unless the parts being glued can be held firmly in place. If possible I glue the joints together with superglue (crazy glue) and then apply a line of epoxy resin to the joint. It doesn’t always work though.
You can glue small parts using nothing but superglue if they are very light but load-bearing joints need to be pinned. If you can drop the miniature without it falling apart then it’s strong enough.
