Which Warhammer army should I choose?
I am an intermediate player and I don’t mind having to paint challenging armies. I like Lizardmen, Vampire Counts, and High Elves the most. Which is best?

VC is probably the best of the three but LM and HE are not far behind. However, VC tends to do awesome against weaker armies, but only so-so against other top tier armies. The right LM and HE builds can do very against top tier armies but may not be as dominate against lower tier armies.
In terms of play style all three can be build to dominate the Magic phase. VC mostly defensive, HE and LM mixture of support and offensive. HE and LM can also be build to bring some of the best magic defense in the game.
LM probably have the edge in terms of building a close combat focused army. HE are not far behind, however their due to their points costs they will not be able to field as much, and the characters don’t hold a candle to the LM Saurus ones in terms of combat prowess, especially at the hero level. Most of the VC units are crap in combat. You’d be fighting a war of attrition in most cases, raising fallen models until you can overwhelm the enemy. They do have some hard hitting models, but they are more the exception than the rule.
Shooting probably will not be the main feature in any of these armies, but of the three HE have the most support available, with LM close behind. HE by more traditional and stationary means, bows and bolt throwers, LM with more situational and mobile tools, poisoned skink javelins and blowpipes, salamanders and razordons, and howdah weapons on stegs. VC have pretty much no shooting to speak of.
LM and HE are about equal in terms of maneuverability, HE as whole, LM with a mix of fast troops and slower troops. VC tend to be slower, but can get movement in the magic phase relatively easily.
Leadership/psychology-wise VC have the clear edge with everything being immune to Psych, fear-causing, and unbreakable. LM and HE are pretty good overall in this area though, with high Ld for HE and the Cold-Blooded rule for LM.
