Should I go to law enforcement or practice law?
I have a great interest in law and thats what brings me into a situation. If I continue school, I will earn my B.A. and be out of law school in 5 years. The money is attracting and a comforting lifestyle for my future and my childrens future when I have some and I love politics and may wish to pursue a profession in the political area eventually if I choose law school. On the other hand, I love doing jobs that require a physical demand and guns. I would be a police officer to start out about 40k a year and go into swat, narcotics or even be a trooper in some task force. On the side I would join the Marine Corps reserves which I will do regardless which route, but just easier with the police because the military leave and they would be similar. Please anyone in these careers give me advise on whats an average day and why one of these jobs are worth choosing more. Please real answers and liberals, no military bashing either. Its not needed because you don’t support our troops or war.
Put this fact into the mix: contrary to popular belief, most attorneys do not make tons of money. Most attorneys work hard and long hours just to pull down a living wage. The only attorneys that do well tend to be those that are hired on a partnership track into a silk stocking lawfirm after graduation. These slots are few and far between, and are generally reserved to the top graduates of ivy league lawschools.
On the other hand, if you join a police force, you will have (probably) a comparable salary with excellent benefits (which you may not be able to afford in a solo practice or small practice). In most police departments, you can retire after 20 years and draw a good pension (and work at your next career job for additional income). Whereas, as a lawyer, you will probably work until you die. That is the nature of the law (unless you are at a large lawfirm that has a mandatory retirement age).
Finally, if you want to see your family, be a police officer. The job has regular hours for the most part. The attorney’s job: in very early to work, you stay very late at the office, you work long hours on weekends (especially just prior to trial).
