Me and a friend Need help choosing warhammer 40k armies?
So me and a friend have been seeing that some of our friends have been getting into warhammer 40k. I myself have been playing the computer game and have been interested in playing the tabletop. But i understand the costs and i want to make sure that the first army i pick is something around what i’m looking for.
My preferences for army’s ( that i noticed playing dawn of war II)) is that I like being able to have some up close and personal units that can take punishment and not have a shit ton of units to have to watch over. So I was thinking about going ork, but I would like to see what other options fall under what I’m interested.
As for my friend, he is more of a heavy defensive type of guy. In most RTS that he has played, he has always played the defensive type of units/ tank units. so what armies fall under his preference or at least something similar?

Well if I were to suggest a starter army for you and your friend, you sound like a Tyranids type of guy. Most people play Tyranids as a swarm army but this is not necessary, an effective Tyranid army can be created using mostly monstrous units that are like tanks on Hulk juice. These guys can take a lot of punishment some of them even being able to regenerate. However if you really like Space Marines try the Blood Angels who specialize in close combat, quick movement, and deep strike. Take a look at these two and I am 90% sure you will pick one of these as your first army.
Your friend sounds like he would enjoy using either Chaos or the Tau. When using Chaos he should focus on either Plague Marines or Thousand Sons both of which and take a hellish amount of punishment while your heavy support and blast the enemy from afar. The Tau are focused on range normally blasting half of an army apart before they even arrive at their target. However the Tau are very squishy and even if a small force gets you in close combat your in trouble.
I believe these are some good choices for you and it is always awesome to see new players join the battle. I’ve played for years but down’t take my word for it take a look around these are only suggestions.
