As with most 40k army choices, it really does depend on what kind of fighting style you’re looking to play. The three armies you’ve chosen are all pretty different, and have their own strengths and weaknesses. I’ll go through each in turn.
Tyranids – these are arguably the most popular of the three armies you’ve chosen. They’ve got some powerful monstrous creatures and strong troops – you can build a pretty impressive horde army with them to overwhelm your enemy. It’s also interesting to note that Games Workshop will be bringing out a new Tyranids codex in January 2010, which will give them new rules, and they’ll also be bringing out new plastic models for them too to support the new codex release.
Tau – they are one of 40k’s most shooty armies, with some pretty impressive weaponry on their side. If you like the idea of blasting your opponent at range with hover-tanks and battlesuits bristling with weapons, these are the guys to go for. They are, however, pretty useless in close combat! Do not bother with an Etherial though – once you’ve read the rules, you’ll understand why they’re not a great unit to take. I would personally drop the Kroot for some Firewarriors too – the Firewarrior’s pulse weapons are very nasty.
Dark Eldar – out of the three armies you’ve picked, these are the ones I’m most unfamiliar with, never having played against them. I do know that their codex is pretty outdated, and I’m not sure . Therefore, my impression is that they’re not the most popular or competitive of armies. Unless you really like the background, I would give them a miss, unless other answerers can give you a convincing reason to take them.
If I was in your position, I would wait until January and pick up the new Tyranid codex. If you’re unwilling to wait, then I’d go for the Tau. They’re a fun army, have some great looking models, and a lot of firepower on their side. You have to play them smartly however, and not let your opponent get too close. The Dark Eldar are too uncompetitive to pick in my humble opinion, at least until GW gives them some more love.
