Is it possible to understand the Heldenhammer book by warhammer without having ever played or read any other?
Hi, I love reading fantasy stories (specially ones that have at least a little bit of romance in it) and right now I’m finishing up the War of the ancients archive by Richard A. Knaak (It’s a world of warcraft trilogy) anyways, game books seem to be very interesting and a friend of mine who plays warhammer told me about the countless books they had. He specifically told me he enjoyed reading Heldenhammer, could I read this book without knowing anything about the game?
(The reason why I can’t ask him is because he’s on vacations and his cellphone won’t work) Anyways I don’t think I’ll get this answered but if you can please 
Categorically, yes.
No Black Library book requires any more pre-knowledge of the universe than you will find in the short blurb at the start of each novel. It could be argued that knowing the game world in advance will help you to spot the in-jokes and Easter eggs that many authors like to plant in their writing; but it could equally be argued that knowing so much that you spot it whenever an author makes a continuity error diminishes ones pleasure.
As it happens, Heldenhammer is set at the very, very beginning of human history in the warhammer world, describing events well-known to all players. So if you don’t know what happens to Sigmar and his tribe, you could well find the novel even more satisfying and exciting than those of us who’ve known how the story ends for 20+ years.
