Good Warhammer fantasy army for a 40k player.?
I play warhammer 40k (Black Templars) and have an average amount of experience. I play a little bit of fantasy (Warriors of Chaos) but they just don’t seem right for me. Anyways, I’m now looking for a new fantasy army. I would like something with a pretty powerful and solid HQ (though I guess thats pretty much everyone) and a challenging army to play in general. Something that makes you think. I know that fantasy is all about blocks of people marching forward, but I would like something a little more…. manueverable. Oh, and an elite army would be my first pick, but not required. Any ideas?
The most powerful characters are the greater daemons in the daemon fantasy army. However, these don’t require a lot of thought to use. Likewise vampire counts can have a powerful HQ but when he dies so does his army and the army is not very challenging to play because you never run away. Dwarfs have very solid characters but the army is very slow. If you did not like chaos warriors then It sounds dark elf or high elf army could be the army for you.
Elf characters can be powerful because of their high weapon skill and initiative. They have excess to powerful dragons as well as other flying monsters. They do require some thought, otherwise they end up squashed because they are only toughness 3. But to help them they have excess to the best protective items, so they can survive a few rounds of combat. The elite infantry in both armies are powerful despite their low armour value and rip apart units for fun but can be fragile if used incorrectly. It is not a good idea to march them towards an area where the enemy has concentrated their missile troops.
Both armies have quick infantry, excess to skirmishers and very fast light cavalry. However they are a few differences. The high elf army have very fast heavy cavalry, while the dark elves use the slower fear causing cold one knights and have more excess to monsters.
Finally, dark elves have a reputation of being 1 of the most powerful armies but I think high elves in the new edition are just as powerful. If you avoid the most powerful army builds then dark elves or high elves could be the fast moving, challenging army that you are looking for.
