Tricky question about saluting?
I am a cadet and i was talking to my instructors on what happens if an LT passes a senior NCO. My PMS, a Colonel now, said that when he was an LT and got to his 1st duty station he actually passed by a Sergeant Major and the SM walked right by, and my Colonel said that he went with his gut instinct and said, “Excuse me…SM.” And the SM said sorry sir, snapped to attention and saluted him. It turns out that the SM was simply testing a blue LT, and obviously the Colonel passed.
Now, I’ve heard different stories about similar situations about senior level NCOs laughing or poking fun at LTs who remind them to salute. So I was looking to get some insight on what to do.
Personally, if a SM walked by and I was an LT, I probably would not say anything cuz that SM is probably has something more important to take care of then to greet a blue Lieutenant. Am I right in doing this or should I enforce the rules?
Sounds apocryphal to me. I don’t know of ANY SgtMaj who would do such a thing. He didn’t get to be one by doing stupid things.
It is simple, you don’t salute the man/woman, you salute the rank. And officers outrank ALL enlisted people. When I was an O-3, I had a few that tried that crap with me…it did not go well for them. No professional soldier blows off an Officer, except maybe on TV.
An officer respects his/her men/women…and an enlisted man/woman shows respect to his/her officers. It is just that simple. Me, I hate saluting, but I didn’t make up the rules. I also didn’t spend 5 years in the USAF (enlisted, Vietnam Vet), 4 years in college, and 6 years getting a PhD…to get dissed by anyone.
EDIT FOR zebj25: Well, I did both…went to university…and served in a war as an enlisted man. So much for your theory. Remember, a good number of officers are prior service.
NEW EDIT FOR ZEB: No sweat. I didn’t think you gave me the thumbs down…that was probably the original poster. I cash my VA check either way. LOL I hear what you are saying…and, sadly, we have a lot of 2LTs that lose it over crap…they rarely last beyond their first 4. NCOs are there for you to learn from, not for you to dis…and most officers would be well advised to remember that. I do not excuse bad behavior by officers either. This kid’s PMA instructor should be disciplined for telling such a story…I think he forgot that the “P” in his title stands for “Professional.”
