Help selecting a warhammer army?
I would like to start a Warhammer army. Im fine with either Fantasy or 40K, but I would prefer 40k. I am not sure which army to select, beings that I don’t know stats on each one, or even which ones are available. The most experience I have with a battle is grabbing a few of my brothers old pieces and made up my own rules and played on my ping-pong table.
I want an army that…
Is moderately inexpensive
Is not Space Marines
Has some good magical ability
Has good defense from ranged attacks
Has good close range attacks, but still some ranged
And is fun/somewhat easy to play/pick up on! =)

I shall repeat the advice I give to people on Y!A on this subject time and again.
Collecting, assembling and painting an army for 40k or WFB is a hugely time-consuming activity that will require you to return again and again to miniatures that have already consumed hours of your life. In order to sustain your interest and commitment, the important thing is not to pick an army based on its stats or even on its performance. Rather, base the decision on how your feel about the army.
To learn more about the armies that you can choose, visit Games Workshop’s website, at http://games-workshop.com. They have hundreds of pages of free content, artwork, tutorials and inspiring illustrations of their miniature range. Pick the army that will most drive you to finish it, in which you are most prepared to consider the investment of time and money to be worthwhile. Pick the army that flicks what I call the “ZOMG!” switch in your brain.
And if that should happen to be Space Marines, that’s no bad thing.
