Am I supposed to build WarMachine/WarHammer miniatures before I paint them?
Or is it the other way around?
Some parts on the War Machine mini’s seem like they would be difficult to paint after assembly.

I only buy metal figs from Games Workshop, and of course WarMachine is always metal.
I only actually play WarMachine, I just like looking at the GW figs.

The simple answer is: it depends.
Generally speaking, one assembles first and then paints. But in some cases, as you’ve discovered, assembling first leaves parts of the model inaccessible or awkward to paint. A classic example is a space marine model, because with a weapon in its hands, it’s very hard to paint the chest plate. So many hobbyists leave the bolter unglued until the chestplate is painted, painting the weapon separately and then attaching it afterwards.
Obviously, this is easiest with plastic miniatures. With metal miniatures that require pinning, post-paint assembly can lead to some poor fitting. However, for the best possible results it’s still worth leaving some parts off the model when painting. Any damage or discolouration resulting from the post-paint assembly can then be touched up once the glue is dry.
