Imperial Guard, Warhammer 40K?
I have played around a little bit with Orks, and have a fair understanding of how to play with the Space Marines but I was wondering what other people’s impressions were in regards to playing with the Imperial Guard. The general background and the notion of how they would play seems more appealing to me (Killer Kans and titans are cool and all but infantry, heavy weapons, artillery and the like sounds appealing.)
I have been told that this faction is hard to play with in comparision to most other factions, but I haven’t bought a codex to see before knowing whether or not I want to start sinking money in.
It also seems that the Imperial guard would be one of the more expensive armies to play with, is this the case?
Any information would be appreciated really.
In my opinion Imperial Guard are devastatingly effective, if you are playing on any map where you can get cover saves it (in my opinion) is an almost guaranteed win. Imperial Troops are one of the cheapest units in the game and if you are able to keep them all in cover and just shoot your enemy, you looking at an army that shoots better than orks and has a world wide 4+ invulnerable save. I have faced armies of Imperial Guard that are based off of infantry and tanks (and they can take a lot of tanks). Surprisingly it is the Infantry that send me running home crying for mommy. I would start the game facing so many heavy weapons even my terminators would start shaking in their armored hides. (now I could be wrong about this being that this was fourth edition) But during one battle I had 18 Lass Cannons fired at my tanks, needless to say it was quickly an Infantry vs Infantry battle on turn one. You even have problems in close combat. For Example, say I assault a pesky Guard squad with some Korne Berserkers. The Guards are easily defeated and they are either all dead or quickly retreat… which leave my expensive units standing with their pants down, with about 100 more Imperial guns trained on me ready for revenge. Imperial guard tank armies (while effective) get rid of the Imperial Guard’s main advantage which is numbers and an opponent takes a lot of heavy weapons your tanks won’t last long.
In summary, Imperial Guard is an effective army if used properly just like any army in Warhammer 40k. (Except Dark Eldar….silly Dark Eldar you will never get an update) As far as price goes Imperial Guard will be a little more expensive but that should be the least of your worries. You are going to have a lot…a lot of models to build. Either way get the Codex first before you make up your mind and enjoy!
