What is the most current version of Dungeons & Dragons the RPG?
And would you reccomend buying this edition or an older version for the best game-play.
4th edition is the newest, it came out last year. The previous version was 3.5 and in my opinion it was better. 4.0 seems to be more like World of Warcraft made into an RPG – it’s all about everybody getting a chance to do everything, resulting in very same-y characters and nobody really being able to look cool. Not to mention the very long, tedious, micro-managed fights where you have to keep track of all these tiny little modifiers all over the place and by the end of it you don’t even care whether you win or not just as long as it doesn’t keep going into yet another round. In 3.5 you could create unique characters who had a proper niche in the party and were amazing at what they were good at.
Which version you should spend your money on depends on what you’re doing – if you are going to join an existing gaming group then you’ll be stuck with whichever version they are running. If you’re going to set up a new group with your friends then I’d go for 3.5. Not least because you can pick up the books really cheaply second hand.
4.0 is however supported by an online package (which you have to pay a monthly fee for though) which has a pretty nifty character generator. This saves a lot of time on character creation and means you don’t need to buy all of the books. I wish they did something like that for 3.5!
Don’t bother with the earlier editions. Nobody really plays them any more and while I loved them at the time I prefer the newer versions now.
